Author Interview – Lucas Heath

What writing are you most proud of? The work that I’ve enjoyed the most would be BoX. I like a lot of my other stories, but BoX was something new, deep, and more intricate than anything else I’ve written.

What are you most excited about in your personal life? I am excited for all the traveling I will get to do in these upcoming years, as well as the stories that will come from my travels.

What books did you love growing up? I was a HUGE fan of the Animorphs series (K. A. Applegate). I was also a big fan of Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card). Only a few years ago, I read Ted Dekker’s Black, Red, White, and Green, and totally got hooked on all his books.

Who is your favorite author? Ted Dekker!

What genre of books do you adore? I’m a big fan of science fiction, though I don’t care too much about stories involving space travel. I also enjoy some fantasy books, such as the Inheritance Cycle (Christopher Paolini).

What book should everybody read at least once? Everyone should read Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card) at least once! Especially since the movie is coming out soon.

Are there any books you really don’t enjoy? There aren’t any books specifically, but by genre, I’m not a fan of romance.

What do you hope your obituary will say about you? I hope that my obituary would say that I loved well and that I gave my life for others.

Location and life experiences can really influence writing. Tell us where you grew up and where you now live? I grew up in Washington State, near Puget Sound. I could see Seattle off in the distance and got to see the ocean all the time. Right now, I live in Minnesota, though in September I’ll be moving to Atlanta, Georgia!

How did you develop your writing? I developed my writing by reading many books and continuing to write. I have been part of a writing website for a while now, where I get critiqued on the work I post. I continue to learn and grow. I strive to make my writing better and enjoyable.

Where do you get your inspiration from? I get a lot of inspiration from movies, books, and video games. If I watch, read, or play a great story, it will spark something in me and propel me to write something amazing. Words of encouragement from others also help inspire me, especially when the encouragement is about something I recently wrote.

What is hardest – getting published, writing, or marketing? Getting published by a traditional book publisher can be extremely hard, which is why I went with self-publishing. Self-publishing is easy to do, but it’s tedious and can involve money. When you self-publish, you have to do all the marketing yourself, or hire someone to do it. You need to get your story edited and you need a decent book cover. Since you can get all of these things done by spending money, I would say that writing is truly the hardest part. Creating a story that is captivating, has inspiring characters, and has an intriguing plot can be overwhelming.
