Author Interview – Rob Manary @robmanary

What makes you happiest?

A twelve pack of Molson Canadian and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars DVD. A close second would be a day free to spend writing. Actually, a close second would be a twelve pack of Budweiser and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars DVD, but definitely third would be a free day to write.

What’s your greatest character strength?

I have an almost inhuman ability to withstand criticism. That might stem from my blissful belief that anyone who might have anything negative to say about my writing is completely full of shit and/or doesn’t know what they are talking about and/or is a part of a shadowy government conspiracy intent on bringing me down. I’m pretty proud of that last sentence. If I were a reader I would definitely buy anything I wrote based on that sentence alone!

Why do you write?

Because I can’t sing. Rock star was my first career choice, but a complete absence of talent forced me to consider writing as a path to fame and fortune. That’s not true; writing is not a path to fortune or fame. I write because I love to create. I love to be able to form stages for my characters to strut and fret upon. I love to be able to create pictures from words. Critics, however, might suggest I try singing.

What motivates you to write?

There is nothing on T.V. Seriously it is a bleak landscape out there. Writing for me is entertainment. Creating characters, watching them struggle, watching them grow, watching scenes unfold beneath my fingertips is far more entertaining for me than anything on television.

When I begin a chapter I am often surprised where my creations take me. I am often like a medium channeling the voices of the characters, and they dictate the flavor and direction. In writing “Icarus Rising” I assembled the cast and they seemed to do the work.

What writing are you most proud of?

I collaborated on a role-playing game that never quite got the attention I believe it deserved. It was a world based loosely on David Bowie’s concept album, Diamond Dogs. I am extremely proud of the writing I did for this Role-playing game, Hunger City. The tag line was “A brand new Dark Age.”

If I ever become wildly successful, or find an eccentric backer, I would assemble the writers I worked with on Hunger City and give it the treatment it deserves. I earnestly believe the themes and concepts could translate into a lucrative franchise. David Bowie, call me?
